Ganesh Chaturthi, rooted in ancient Hindu tradition, celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha, the god of wisdom and prosperity. It became a popular public festival under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. It gained momentum during Indiaโs freedom struggle, led by Lokmanya Tilak, who saw it as a way to unite the masses.
Festivities and Traditions
The 10-day festival is marked by installing beautifully adorned Ganesha idols in homes and pandals (public platforms). Devotees perform aarti (prayers), offer sweets like modak, and sing devotional songs. On the final day, idols are immersed in water, symbolising Ganeshaโs return to his heavenly home.
